Sardinia is the second largest island in Italy after Sicily, lying south of Corsica. In the view from Tuscany, therefore, it is usually either one of the small islands or Corsica - but even Sardinia can be seen in clear weather - usually after a storm and rain. Three airports and various ferries allow connections from Italy and elsewhere. An interesting period in Sardinia was the so-called Nuragic civilisation, dating back to about 1500 BC. Although their existence is still incompletely answered and explored, there are around 7000 structures on the island - the so-called nuraghs - that have survived to this day and their largest grouping has been internationally recognised by UNESCO - short guided tours are also available. Southern Sardinia is very diverse, with mountains, cliffs and uninhabited areas, but also long sandy beaches on a rugged coastline. One curiosity - as the number of tourists increases, so does the number of those who take some of the beautiful sand from the beach home with them and apparently display it for admiration in a cupboard. For several years now, this gesture has been forbidden and punishable by a fine. It should be remembered that checks at Sardinia's airports and railway stations have seized 10 tonnes of sand stolen from the beaches.
