Sarzana - Middle Ages and Nature

Liguria, small and hospitable, with many ancient and inviting locations, such as historic Sarzana. A small municipality that developed in the Middle Ages, but was founded on a forgotten Roman colony, the town of Luni. Today it is one of the most visited and loved centres in the Val di Magra. An ideal place to easily reach Tuscany, Emilia Romagna and central Liguria. 

Since it is very ‘concentrated’, one can reach splendid monuments by walking through the beautiful villages.

The Sarzanello Fortress was built in 960 AD and is still one of the most imposing medieval structures in excellent condition. Also known by the name of: Fort Castruccio. It has no less than three towers, high walls and, as in fairy tales, a moat, now dried up, with a drawbridge in disuse. Its shape is reminiscent of an arrow, so much so that legends speak of a motion of great esoteric force.

In Piazza Niccolò V is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, which has respected a medieval style from the outside. It was founded on the ancient church of St Basil. The interior respects a Baroque style of architecture, with wide arches, columns and capitals. The marble tabernacle with the relic of the blood of Jesus is spectacular.

Sarzana is not only history and the Middle Ages, but nature and beautiful waterways. The small lakes of Bozi Saudino originate from former clay and gravel quarries. They were then flooded by a natural aquifer, creating an area that today has its own microclimate and biodiversity.

Do you love the beach and the clean sea? Then the Fiumaretta beach near the mouth of the river Magra, Fossa Maestra and the Goletta await you. The beaches are completely natural, with fine sand and a deep blue sea.
