Montignoso: the holiday village nestled amongst castles, the Alps and the mountains

In Tuscany, there is a stunning, little-known village that is becoming increasingly popular for slow and low-cost tourism: Montignoso. Within just a few kilometres, you can go from the beaches of Versilia to the footpaths of the Apuan Alps, from the frenetic nightlife to relaxing walks in nature, amidst contemporary attractions and the history of medieval castles. A diverse destination, perfect for both a day trip and a longer holiday.

The village’s iconic landmark is Aghinolfi Castle, one of the oldest fortifications in central Italy. Its commanding position on the hill makes it fascinating both for its history and its panoramic views, which stretch all the way to the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The castle is used for events, ceremonies and cultural initiatives, making it one of the most distinctive places to experience the atmosphere of this village.

Lago di Porta, hiking and birdwatching

Those who love walking, keeping fit or seeking new experiences along nature trails will find the area around Montignoso ideal for hiking, e-biking or mountain biking. The trails leading up towards the Apuan Alps wind through woods, hillsides and small hamlets, offering routes with varying levels of difficulty and unique features.

The routes marked by the CAI provide the most structured excursions. For a less demanding walk, you can opt for scenic hilltop trails. 

  It’s a good idea to set off in the morning, when the temperatures are more pleasant, and spend the afternoon visiting the villages or exploring the coast.

For photography enthusiasts, the viewpoints are particularly interesting, with the contrast between the mountains and the sea creating scenes typical of the Apuan region.

For a completely different experience, there’s Lake Porta. This wetland lies between the village and the coast. The nature reserve is an important habitat for biodiversity, with cooler, more pleasant temperatures, as well as offering lake activities such as hiring small boats to cross it or going diving. There are also ideal spots for birdwatching around the lake.

The lake is also a good choice for families who wish to alternate a day at the seaside with an experience in nature.

These are not the only activities on offer. The village is very close to the coast. In just a few minutes, you can reach the beaches of Versilia, where you can spend a day swimming, visiting beach clubs, strolling along the promenade and enjoying water sports.

Summer festivals and local traditions

During the summer, Montignoso comes alive with festivals, fairs and events organised throughout the area, some of which take place exclusively within the castle. The town’s calendar features summer initiatives and activities aimed at children and young people, reflecting the town’s vibrancy during the tourist season.

Food festivals are the best way to discover the local cuisine. Outdoor dining, local produce and traditional recipes allow you to savour the region’s specialities – dishes made with herbs and fruits that grow wild in the surrounding area.

It should also be remembered that the local economy has always been based on the production of top-quality olive oil. Olive oil is one of the region’s finest agricultural products and pairs perfectly with Tuscan bread, vegetables, cheeses and local dishes.
