Fivizzano (MS), the mysterious caves and the mystical place
Set amongst medieval castles, stone villages and rugged mountains, Fivizzano is one of the most fascinating destinations in Lunigiana for those wishing to combine culture, outdoor activities and fine dining. The landscape changes from one kilometre to the next. You move from history to caves, from caves to Etruscan sites, and from Etruscan sites to local produce.
Small, yes, but certainly ever-changing. Ideal in every season. In summer, temperatures are milder than by the sea, and in winter there is a truly convivial and pleasant atmosphere.
Historic Centre and Piazza Medicea
Fivizzano has an interesting historic centre, dominated by the picturesque Piazza Medicea. The square recalls the period when the Medici family became the most powerful noble family in Tuscany, eventually playing a central role in the appointment of bishops and cardinals. This structure is a testament to political power that was evident even in small villages.
In the adjacent narrow streets, there are historic palaces, religious buildings and glimpses of the ancient Lunigiana architecture, which always bears the Medici name. There are also plenty of shops and boutiques, as shopping is a popular pastime even whilst on holiday, making it a form of entertainment suitable even for the very young.
A short distance from the village lies the Castello della Verrucola. The fortress dominates the landscape and can be visited both inside and out.
However, why limit yourself to the historic centre? Let’s enjoy a different experience at the Equi Caves – one of the most fascinating attractions in the municipality. This karst complex offers a glimpse into life underground, given that these caves were used in the Middle Ages – including to hide ‘contraband’ or political figures – but were also the first dwellings of the Etruscan colony that founded the neighbouring villages.
The visit can be combined with activities at the Geo-Archeo-Adventure Park, where nature, geology and archaeology take centre stage. It’s a particularly appealing option for families and visitors looking to turn their day out into an active experience.
Enthusiasts – or rather, the more adventurous among you – also have the chance to try their hand at caving and other outdoor activities organised by reliable guides, and to tackle the trails with qualified instructors.
