Pomarance, the otherworldly Tuscan village: what an experience!
Let’s talk a little about a village that has a ‘fantasy’ feel to it, yet can be visited any month of the year: Pomarance, in Tuscany. A village in the Val di Cecina known throughout the world for two reasons: history and geothermal activity. But what does that mean, and above all, what experiences does this area offer?
First of all, you’ll find yourself immersed in a picturesque setting with natural vapours rising from the hills. The landscape features intensely coloured terrain that changes with the seasons, and there are dozens upon dozens of natural activities that are healthy, fun and full of adrenaline.
Visiting Pomarance means discovering a different side to Tuscany!
A natural phenomenon unique to Tuscany
The main feature of the Pomarance area is the phenomenon of geothermal energy. Here, heat from the subsoil has been used for over two centuries to generate energy, transforming this area into one of the world’s leading geothermal districts. Among other things, it is also the main source that heats the thermal waters in the nearby village of San Giuliano.
The presence of geysers, fumaroles and natural vapours has shaped the landscape, creating unique scenery and offering alternative tourist experiences with various itineraries that lead you to the local museum. This museum explains the phenomenon, as well as recounting some of the stories linked to this geothermal activity.
Among the most striking attractions is the Parco delle Biancane, a natural area famous for its almost lunar appearance. The name derives from the white colour of the rocks, caused by the vapours and geothermal phenomena that characterise the terrain.
A stroll through the park allows you to observe a landscape that alternates between areas of Mediterranean vegetation, light-coloured rocks, natural steam emissions and spectacular views over the Val di Cecina.
The trails in the Parco delle Biancane are ideal for a leisurely walk and allow you to observe one of Tuscany’s most unique natural environments up close. It is the perfect place for those who love photography, hiking and destinations off the beaten track.
A region steeped in history
There are undeniable advantages to choosing Pomarance for your next holiday, whether it’s a weekend break or a full holiday, namely its proximity to Volterra and San Giuliano Terme.
The former is a town steeped in history and culture, also famous for its lively nightlife. The latter, just a stone’s throw away, offers wellness programmes featuring thermal baths. The third, and most appealing, advantage is that Pomarance offers truly affordable prices for family holidays, group trips or even a romantic getaway for two.
However, we would like to emphasise that this village also offers trekking routes, excursions and visits to areas that are now wooded but which belong to one of the earliest Etruscan settlements ever discovered in Tuscany. So there’s no chance of getting bored; on the contrary, you can plan a variety of activities that are a far cry from mass tourism and which will become experiences you’ll cherish for a lifetime.
