Part of Liguria - from coast to the hills

A small region of Italy, but with a great cultural and tourist heritage, Liguria is today considered one of the 5 most interesting regions. Its five lands are famous throughout the world, so much so that they have even become the protagonists of films and stories.

One of the cities that manages to offer adventures and places not to be forgotten is La Spezia, which is also a starting point for a long tour of the whole of Liguria.

What to visit starting from La Spezia liguria?

We start in fact from La Spezia, what is there to see? Its fishing villages are very beautiful. Characteristic. The waterfront, the port and the other coastal parts perfectly frame the lower part of the city. Obviously, we are talking about a seaside town, in the sense that the city rises up on the coast and then returns.

In any case, starting from La Spezia Liguria, one must visit the following monuments, which are very famous and represent the city's history. The most striking religious sites are:

- Church of Santa Maria Assunta

- Cathedral of Christ the King

- Church of Saints John and Augustine

It should be noted that unlike many other cities, the influence of religion in La Spezia has been very limited. It did not spread throughout the city as its economy was based on merchant ships. Obviously there was a strong economic influence on fishing, but let us say that, in past centuries, it was considered a strategic point for the market in northern Italy.

We then move on to the monuments that tower above the city, such as:

- St George's Castle

- Navy Arsenal

- Oldoini Palace

- Lia Museum

- Stairways of La Spezia

- Umberto Formentini Civic Museum

- Castagnola Palace

- Camec

- Seal Museum

Among the city's best attractions are its markets and gardens, such as:

- Market Square

- Mirabello Harbour Bridge

- Public Gardens

- Central Market

- Green Square

Knowing how to get around makes it easy to appreciate this city. We also find one of the most beautiful medieval villages in Italy, namely Varese Ligure in La Spezia, which can be reached in a few minutes.

The surroundings of La Spezia and Varese Ligure

Starting from the city centre, it is possible to choose different directions. In the surroundings we can easily reach Porto Venere or Palmaria Island, very famous places, especially in summer. Then there are Borghetto di Vara, Marinasco and Castelnuovo Magra.

Otherwise, one can opt for the most beautiful Liguaria beaches, almost all of which are in the vicinity of La Spezia, such as Punta Bianca, Canneto beach, Baia Blu or Cala Fornace.

However, the main tourist attraction is its beautiful village: Varese Ligure. What is there to see in Varese Ligure?

Let's say it is the innermost part that intersects with the trans-Apennine roads. A village that is entirely medieval. It starts with cobblestone streets and cobblestones and ends with medieval buildings.

In Varese Ligure, there is the splendid Fieschi castle with observation towers. We visit the site of the Palazzo del Capitano and the Baroque-style Convent of the Augustinian Nuns with works by Caravaggio inside.

We cross the beautiful 16th century Grexino bridge on foot, which leads to the characteristic quarter of: Grecino. Finally, after a day's strolling, the beautiful Museo Contadino, which recalls the 'peasant' history of the village of Varese Ligure, awaits you. The place is a great tourist attraction as every little alley has something medieval and therefore typical about it.

The area is very well connected and in a few minutes you can reach the city centre of La Spezia or even the neighbouring villages.
